The 2022 version of the preppy isn’t as glamorous as nostalgia-based references like Clueless and the 90s Gossip Girls series, or Carlton Banks from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It has a more laid-back vibe. Tom Barker, style writer on the streetwear website Highsnobiety says this is due to the classic pieces that are blended with streetwear styles. He identifies Aime Leon Dore for the most important brand and the rapper Tyler the Creator as the hottest style model. “If you take a look at the clothing they’re similar to the clothes you’d see in Brooks Brothers, however it’s the context of being a label for streetwear that gives it an extra edge.”

Depop states that in the case of women Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber are the references and Bieber’s choice of white socks and loafers as an iconic style detail. “For the winter seasons, I’d style loafers with a white cotton sock and for evening, they look stunning worn with a simple black sock” adds Liane Wiggins, the head of women’s wear at Matchesfashion.com.

The style of preppy dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, which is at the time the Ivy Look – named in honor of the United States’ Ivy League universities – took the lead. In the 50s wool sweaters, loafers, and Oxford shirt were a common fashion in the US and were a signpost to elites who were educated, and Varsity Jackets were worn daily by athletes at college.

GH Bass is an original brand of preppy clothing. It came up with the penny loafer – which is also called the Weejun in the year 1936. Sales of loafers have risen in line with the latest trends in fashion According to that the company’s European market management Cyril Crentsil. The reason for the increase in the shoes is due to a lack of interest in sneakers. “The sneaker has been the dominant silhouette in conversation in the commercial and cultural arena for a long time. There’s a strong desire to explore other silhouettes.”

These are just a few of the reasons for why the preppy look is making a comeback. it’s a more sophisticated, mature look that contrasts with the baggy and hoodies forms that are increasingly popular and could be seen in streetwear. “Brands are looking to establish their own niche by doing something new,” says Barker. “It’s an opportunity to bridge the gap between luxury and streetwear. more mature streetwear kind of style.”

Wiggins acknowledges this is one reason loafers are becoming popular. “We are seeing our clients returning to work after summer, looking a bit smarter. The loafer is the perfect shoe to match with casual dresses and tailored clothing.”

Also they last beyond the season , because of their popularity. “There’s many different types of people wearing loafers,” says Crentsil. “I think about whether in the event that you had every type of person in a room, they’d share a lot in common. This is the appeal in it.”
